Nope, but how do you mean not hooked up? Just not having it wired? Your ECU will likely throw a code if you don't wire it.

Of course it will. VTEC is actuated by oil pressure and a couple other checks I believe to ensure you're at a certain speed and not in reverse, but those are not confirmed to my knowledge, just Internet banter. Anyhow, when the oil pressure reaches the specified point and you're at the correct RPM (5200, I believe for a B18C1) little shafts in the lifters slide into a third lifter per valve pair and use a taller, more aggressive lobe on the cam. This is VTEC. Read more here: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question229.htm

If your VTEC isn't working properly (or isn't hooked up) then the shaft's won't connect to the third lifter and VTEC will not engage, but you're not restricted to RPM's below VTEC.

Oh, then 5200 must be what I set mine to. Sorry about that :exnbp:

iab's are the secondary butterfly valves in the gsr's dual plenum intake manifold. if you use a p28 and still have the stock intake manifold, the secondaries wont open at 5800 and could cause a lose in power.

another thing i read somewhere is that vtec wont engage below a certain throttle position. so even if you reach 4400 rpm but are under a certain throttle position, vtec wont engage. just something i heard. :dunno:

B18C is 5400.. very easy to hear with aftermarket intake plenum and Short ram intake. VTEC wont open unless at WOT or close to it. VTEC needs the oil pressure supplied by nearly WOT or WOT to engage the cams.

4400 is just too LOW for VTEC. Hell my Civic EX engages at 5400 and thats just a little D16

PS- I disengaged VTEC when i supercharged it by blocking of part of the VTEC oil pressure solenoid. I just allowed the engine to stay in mild cam mode. After I removed the supercharger, I replaced it with a new VTEC solenoid, some aftermarket high lift cams, and it was all good again.

check your facts again. a stock b18c1 will engage at 4400. coupled with the intake secondaries opening at 5800, this makes for a smooth torque curve. now a b18c5 is somewhere around 5800.
