Default Check engine light

How do you figure out what code is being thrown by the CEL? Do you need something to plug in and tell you? Or is there some procedure to figure it out.

In all actuality it is a legitimate question.....He was wondering if there was another option instead of getting and OBD scanner

If I didn't know how, I would NEVER guess to take a paper clip, bend it into a U and find a 2-wire connector behind my glove box to check a code. How in the WORLD is that common knowledge unless you've done it before or seen it done?

No need for the negativity...
