Default water pump

Ok here is the situation, I jus had my engine rebuilt... have had it back for about a yea now and I’ve had some problems with the engine overheating, I’ve changed the thermostat and fan switch to aftermarket ones. Spoon and Mugen respectively and have replaced the radiator cap with one from Buddy Club but I’m still having problems with the engine overheating. The reservoir tank is still at the same level and I haven't noticed any leaks. The question I have now is, is it the water pump and if so would that cause the check engine light to come on? If it is the pump should I replace it with an electric one or an OEM one and is there web site where I can see a diagram of how the belt operates the pump so I can check if there is a problem with the belt? Any help would be great thanks in advance.
