Default !! leaking tranny? !!

so i started my car.... put it in reverse, not problem..... go into first ok.... try to shift to second..... i cant pull the damn thing out of first.... it finaly jiggles free and into second, same problem...... i do a series of coasting and shoving it into first and seee a rather large pool of oil on the ground where i was parked. i pop the hood and theres tranmission fluid, i think, dripping out between the seal of the engine and tranny.

what do i do??

First step is take the tranny off. What you find inside determins the next step.

I'm not saying this is the problem but it's the only spot I can think of that would leak oil from between the tranny and engine. Your problem sounds like it may be worse. You might need a new tranny.
I had oil dripping from the same spot a few weeks ago. It was getting on my clutch and making it slip. It was the mainshaft bearing. It cost me 40 bucks for a new bearing and seal. Here's the kicker, I had to tear the tranny apart to fix it. It wasn't too bad but alot of ppl won't even try it.

come to think of it are you sure your clutch was working properly? I assumed it was but if a seal went out on the slave cylinder your clutch fluid could drip down the side and look like it was coming from the tranny. It would also cause you trouble with shifting.

I agree. See if you are missing clutch fluid.

drain bolts are fine...... theres "wet grease" allllllllllll around the seal.

well here's the deal. where the engine meets the tranny is not a seal. The seals in that area are where the tranny is put together and at the main bearing(Where the shaft comes out of the tranny into the clutch) If you blew the main bearing that would wreck the main bearing oil seal and cause a leak. That's the only thing I can think of that would cause it to leak from where the engine and tranny meet. Judging by your description I would guess either 1. The main shaft bearing blew so bad the shaft is out of place enough to cause shifting problems 2. Something inside broke taking the bearing with it. Bear in mind this is all speculation I would be alot more confident if I saw the car. Either way your tranny is fucked So a mechanic is probably going to suggest a rebuild or replacement tranny. And you know what that means. I suggest you either take it to a mechanic to make sure the tranny is in fact FUBAR. Then buy a working used one and do it yourself or find a mechanic that will do it for a reasonable price. DIY isn't all that bad. WCS wrote a nice clutch DIY that tells step by step how to do it. You'll just need a garage, tools and time. If you feel really brave take the tranny off yourself and crack it open to see if you want to attempt a repair. In my case it was just the bearing and I did it myself for 40 bucks. If I went to a mechanic I garuntee it would have been a new tranny and cost me 1k. It's always new or rebuild tranny, no repair. If your not crunched for transit this would be a great time to learn on your car and save yourself some money. While the tranny is off put(or have) a new clutch in, no sense in doing all that and not the clutch.

This is a crappy pic of my tranny. The blue line is where it meets the engine and is not a seal. The red line is where the 2 housings of the tranny meet and is seal of nothing more than RTV silicon sealant.

cliffs
can't shift+oil on ground=bad tranny=expensive mechanic bill=DIY, don't forget the clutch.

well...... here are some pics....the picture from above just looks like theres grease everywhere and its hard to make out the seal.....

on the bottom one you can see that what ever fluid it was sprayed everywhere when i drove it

i would repair it myself..... but it seems like to important of a thing to take on, and once i have it off i wouldnt know what to look for. AAA is towing it to a shop for me tomorow and we'll go from there.

if he says i need a new one, i dont quite know how i would handle that...... i was going to do an engine swap by myself, but you can ask crzylxx4r whats going on with that..... but before i made up my mind to do a swap, i was told to swap in an si tranny to replace my crappy cx tranny......

and i know that was a bunch of random thoughts at once.

 Man I don't know how oil from the tranny could have gotten on the top of it. That looks like it came from the engine. I have no idea. If it's from the tranny I don't see how it got that far up, if it's from the engine I don't see how it caused your shifting issues. Taking it to the shop is a good call.
