i guess it depends on what your version of 'best' is? power? revs? reliabilty? milage? center of gravity? torque curve? uniqueness? budget? down time?

The question was broad, but not THAT broad. 
I think the question may have been asked with a sense of sensibility & compatibility. With that said, what would be the low/high end of a motor swap in an 05 Civic? What's the EX/SI got in that generation?
