That would be the cheaper way to do it unless he can fix it himself. Since he had to ask, that means he probably can't.

sorry you have to deal with this so soon after joining JDM92CIVIC.

Here's how I do it.

Anyway it is basically as previously stated. Cut and sand all rust away and sand the surrounding area to bare metal. Clean with acetone and mix bond per insturctions and fill area. Don't be afraid to put alot on there. Once hardend (approx 45min) shape it with 80 grit paper and a sanding block. Do not use paper w/o a block or it will be all rippley. Always use a block and the bigger the better. Apply more bondo. Lather rinse Repeat, until it looks good finish with 220. Now spray a little primer on there to keep it from rusting. Bondo has a tendncy to shrink when it cures so let it cure for a week or so. Sand off the primer and touch up if neccessary. Wet sand with 400. Get some color match paint. Mask off the door, wheels and any trim you don't want to paint. Do not mask off a section of the fender, you actually want some over spray to get on it. If you mask off a section you will have an obvious line where the tape was, the overspray will help it blend. Clean the whole area with acetone. give it a couple of coats of primer and let dry for a few days so it hardens pretty good. Wetsand the primer and remove primer overspray with 1500. Let dry and acetone again. Now your finally ready for the final paint. Spray 2-4 coats let dry several days wet sand with 1500-2000, lather rinse repeat. Now your finish will be a bit dull. Go over to napa and grab 3M rubbing compound apply to a rag and buff like a mofo. Eventually it will be all shiny. If you did everything right it will be unnoticable.

now that ive taken a quick look at the pics, you will need to cut out a lot. multiply what you see in the pics by 3-4...and thats how big that rust is... or even bigger. u have a lot of work cut out for you if u decide to go through. I suggest not doing it and either having a shop do it or sell the car. you will not have a good experiene with this. if you dont do it right, that rust WILL, i repeat WILL come back. remember that.

It just depends on the climate he lives in, if his temperature never falls below 0 celsius, then pure bondo would be fine, but where I live in the winter a pure bondo job tends to break out and crack... then the next spring you are practically back to square one.

Bondo is weak, use as little as possible!Cut out rust, weld in new metal (I usually cut it out of another car hood, fender etc.)Grind smooth then fiberglass, then as little bondo as possible...I have found this 2 be much stronger.lasts for ever u dont want 2 hit a pot hole and have your bondo crack!!!!!

this debate could go on forever, just know the following...

if you weld in metal the right way, you dont have to worry about it..

if you use bondo, it might crack out and ruin your paint. you have to worry.

even if u weld the metal right, if u didnt do a decent job on taking out the rust spots and cleaning out the surrounding metal... itll come back

if you dont have much experience and youd like to get it looking perfect, i would take it to a shop. Theyll be sure to get all the rust out and fix it perfectly.
