Mostly people use the b18b blocks.. and b16 heads.. if u have a gsr head use it.. but cheap way is b16 head.
Mostly people leave them stock and run roughly everything stock.. but some upgrades you might wanan think about are the following.
Rod bolts
head studs
injectors
ecu
basically its justa bolt on project golden eagle sells a ls/vtec conversion kit for around 100 bucks to do the whole oil process on the vtec head..
i'd highly suggest looking at honda-tech for some of their build ups and make sure you know where you wanna go with this.. doing ls/vtec 90% of the time means your going all motor.

I had a friend that had an ls/vtec and he said the best way to go is stock parts all the way because they are cheap to replace but he blew his first motor 250 miles into it and he hadn't even broke it in and on top of that he wasnt even ragging it out, the second third fourth and fifth motor didnt turn out too different except his sixth motor which he added a turbo to lasted him a good four months before he blew it at a red light not doing anything except waiting for the light to turn green. So thats why i want to BUILD the thing right. that also how i know these things are not reliable unless fully built.
