Default High flow catalytic converter... info please

i just ordered a high flow cat converter and was about to install it when someone told me that cat converters are suppose to have a screen inside it. the high flow cat i bought does not have a screen. you can see right through it. if it is suppose to be this way and i install it, will my gas mileage be affected by having this different type of cat? if anyone knows.. let me know. thanks

if you can see right through it and there's NOTHING in there, its not a cat, its just some funny-shaped piping. It should have a honeycomb of little ~3/16" squares inside it. If you look straight on, you'll see light coming through, but there will definitely be something in there. If not, you got ripped off.

To answer your question, your gas mileage will not be negatively affected by replacing your cat with this test pipe. Depending upon the emissions screening in your area, you could be in trouble. However, since it looks like a cat, as long as you don't get hooked up to a sniffer you should be ok.

They market these things on Ebay as a high flow cat, which I suppose it technically is as long as there is some catalytic material in the pipe somewhere even though it doesn't do much, if any, catalyzing.

There is really no such thing as a high flow cat per say.... All cats have the same material on the inside, the only difference on a high flow cat is that the inlet and outlet tubes will be bigger. You got yourself there a test pipe. You will not pass emissions if you have that on your car. Your not going to benefit from that either, unless your turbo then you will see faster spool times but other then that, waste of money.

there isn't any material of that nature.. it's essentially a resonator..
