Default Problems removing axle nut

I need to replace the 5 speed manual transmission on my son’s ’97 Honda Civic DX (hatchback). (very noisey - pops out of 4th - will not go into 5th gear). I using the clutch/flywheel replacement guide post by westcoaststyle (https://www.honda-acura.net/forums/s...d.php?p=1715569) as a guide. (It is better written than the manual, and the pictures are great!!)

I’m stuck on removing the axle nut, as simple as that sounds.

Last fall, my son had the axle/cv joints replace by an independent near the school he attends, and they really pounded the rim of the nut. I have straighten the rim of the nut a much as possible, but still cannot loosen the nut. I have sprayed it with liquid wrench, used a 345 ft/lbs impact wrench, and applied heat. Still no luck.

Any suggestions? Anyone ever cut an axle nut off?

Thanks for your help.

You can remove the lower control arm and pull the axle out of the trans without removing it from the hub.

It's not pretty, but I've done it.

He said he used an impact gun. If they did a number on the nut and did not replace it then they were probably so stupid they put red loctite on the threads.

Thanks to those who posted suggestions. I tried all the suggestions here except limp to a shop and have them rip it off. I was a bit far into the project for this. I tried a four foot pipe on a breaker bar – no luck.

I ended up taking gtiger’s suggestion and removing the lower control arm without removing the hub. This worked very well.

Thanks again.

I know this is too late of a reply now since you already got the job done, but the same thing happened to me when I needed to fix my CV boots - I spent about 4 hours trying my hardest to get the axle nut off with no success. Finally, since I didn't have much dissassembled anyways, I put it all back together and drove to a gas station with a repair shop half a mile away. Since they weren't busy, the guy there helped me out and used his impact wrench to loosen it (took him 5-10 seconds), then tightened it back up so I could drive home. Once there, it came off with no problems since it had been broken loose earlier.
