my cx is having a similar problem... ive changed my plugs, wires, rotor, cap, fuel filter, o2 sensor, and my exhaust still smells like crap half the time, and i get cel #1 (bad o2 reading) all the time (its weird b/c it resets every time i shut off the ignition). now im thinking my ECu is bad... i cant figure out whats wrong

now, to add to the discussion I should make the note that I am getting around 24mpg right now, which is far below average, and thats the SAME whether im driving hard or driving easy.
the smell is sometimes there at idle, but usually its after a hard drive. there is a serious carbon deposti on the inside of my stock tailpipe as well

from what i recall, you disconnect the negative battery cable for 10 - 15 minutes and that will reset the ecu...

when resetting the ecu make sure your car is cooled. disconnect negative pole of battery. wait 5-10 minutes. reconnect. start car with absolutely everything turned off and let idle until temp gauge shows normally.
fuji I think that little beast is more trouble than shes worth. rip out that dx piece and make it into a coffee table. heh sorry for no input but I'm no mechanic. did you ever mess with your timing?

like ive said a few times already skubb, she came from the lot with these weird smells. And as far as the coffee table, well, id like to make the mistakes with the throwaway before i pour my heart into a new engine. Right now im thinking about finding a corolla, a midget, or a mini for a daily driver..im sick of the civic bull****. but i digress. I wonder if its as simple as mis gapped sparkies? Timing looks really good, i was playing with the belt the other day, so its nice and tight and wouldnt have slipped.
it could DEFINATELY be a plug gap... o2 sensor would probably throw a code... right??? incorrect gap eqauls less ingited fuel euquals more left over fuel equals more rich mixture enough to cause soot and smell..
