vtec is controlled by rpms.

i dont think youl feel vtec much on a SOHC, i have same motor and i can hardly feel anything if at all... just noise... lol. youl hear it tho its supposed to be smooth transition, but ive heard from a friends type r teg he can feel it, its a DOHC, and yes its controlled by a few things like the rpms as flatliner said, oil pressure and engine temp...

Three criteria need to be met, over a certain speed, like 15 mph, water temperature above a certain amount, just short of operating temp, and engine rpm over whatever the engagement point is, anywhere from somewhere betweer 5000-5800 depending on the engine.

Temp sensor
speed sensor
Knock sensor
and one more

if those things to not register to the ecu you will not get VTEC.

There are like 1 or 2 more but can't remember.
