Default Bouncing Speedometer needle

Anyone have this problem? I have two speed sensors to check with and they both come up with the same results. This mostly happens when the car is hot. It doesn't always happen though, but I do have to keep my rad fan turned on while driving. Sometimes it'll go crazy and read 120 mph when i'm going only 75-80. Or else it'll just die and won't read at all which of course, will throw a code, speed sensor.
If you have this, what have you done with fix it?

This happens to me as well - usually when the car is still cold. I haven't thrown any codes though. I figured it was the speed sensor but haven't taken the time to go buy a new one just to "test" it.

Sorry, I'm no help to you... but I'm interested in hearing what others have to say about it.

Not sure why this happens to you when your car is cold.
I finally looked at the speed sensor yesterday. I took it out and decided to swap it with another one that I have. There is a crack in the mounting part of the housing. So then I take a test drive to Starbucks and no speedo reading... I go back home after there and take the second one out and look at both the speed sensors... I take them apart and inspect them closely.
I reassemble the three pieces that makeup the speed sensor and reinstall it. Go for a test drive around the block and now it is all good

Well, I was about to order a speed sensor until I was driving to San Jose from Sacramento today and realized that the odometer indicated that that I had only travelled 30mi... but I know I had driven almost 100. The entire time my speedo was reading 110mph (or thereabouts) when I know I was only doing 70-75.

Cliff's Notes: Speedo reads too high at random, odo reads too low at the same time.

I'm thinking gauge cluster here. Any suggestions otherwise?

what car model and year is it? because i had a 1990 honda accord ex.... turns out they have defective speed sensors.. my speedometer needle would bouce up all over the place and then eventually after 2 weeks stopped working all together and then randomly would pop up on the freeway going 75mph.. it would also just jump up and down randomly and almost dance to the beat of the radio up and down etc.... really weird.. but ya turned out my speed sensor was bad so i had it replaced.. kinda expensive.. i think i paid under $150 beecause i didn't want to bother with it at the time the part isn't too expensive but i bet thats what it is..

My car's in my sig. I called the local Honda dealer and they wanted $107 for the sensor. Autozone only wanted $10 less. But I don't know if that's my problem.

jweltch, that sounds like a cluster problem. If it was just the needle then it would be the vss or speedo. But the odometer isn't reading high??? I had a spare harness for the vss and just resoldered the wires together yesterday and it looks all good today. So check your wiring first. It is easy to pullout the vss. on the tranny. One 10mm bolt and wiggle it out. Also unplug it of course. Check it over if you are not sure if that is the problem, but start there first.

mini-me, hmmm. Sounds like the vss or the wiring because it works hot and not cold>? Check those out and inspect. It is a very simple process.
Go to the sticky if you need diy. Reinstall in and test drive.

Is there a way to test the VSS plug with a multimeter? Will it give you a reading, or does the car need to be moving for any kind of output?

You can remove the vss to test it without having to drive the car by removing a 10mm bolt attached to the tranny. The other way would require another person to help you test it.
