what makes a CVT tranny special from normal civic tranny?
What it means the consumer, is the CVT is a more efficient transmission than the traditional automatic gear box. That means, more efficient use of the power from an engine through the tranny which means better performance. Or, you can think of it this way: better economy for the same performance.
A transmission must match the engine it's being mated to regardless of if it's manual, auto, or CVT. Or you can find ways to custom mate the two.

i need to look i don't thin it will go for my 90 1.5 crx which i might make it manual. I might take take the manual tranny from my hatchback and drp it in my 1.5 crx if it will fit from my 1.6. drop cvt in my hacthback if the CVT tranny fit. my wife prefer automatic the volvo she drives is at 20mpg witthe civic we get like 32mpg
just keep it simple and do the manual tranny swap. i think it is a lot more involved than you think it is to drop in a CVT. i dont even think honda made a CVT tranny for the D series. ive only seen it on the civic hybrid and the insight.
I would never swap in a CVT tranny. If anything breaks (and it is more likely to on a CVT vs. a normal manual) it will be expensive to fix.
CVT's are beneficial because they have infinately variable gear ratios so you are always in the optimal range of the engine. The down side is that they cannot handle much power as they will start to slip.
