What it means the consumer, is the CVT is a more efficient transmission than the traditional automatic gear box. That means, more efficient use of the power from an engine through the tranny which means better performance. Or, you can think of it this way: better economy for the same performance.

A transmission must match the engine it's being mated to regardless of if it's manual, auto, or CVT. Or you can find ways to custom mate the two.
