Default Honda-civic-97 weird engine noise

My ac broke a while ago, it was ok because I don't really need ac. As time went by the engine started to make a grinding noise, and now it's become really loud. What might it be? Is it due to the ac? Do the spark plugs have something to do with it? thanksss

grinding noise from where? are you still running the A/C belt?
If you're still running the belt it's highly possible that your compressor is fried and the engine is still spinning it.

I can't think of a way that spark plugs could be making a grinding noise. But to be sure what's going on, take it somewhere to have it looked at. Grinding noises are never good.

see if central part of AC pulley still rotating with outer part.
What was the problem with AC. Was it compressor or freon leak?

If the ac belt is on i would remove it if it doesn't work. If the noise stops its either the idler or the compressor.

I once had whining noise and it was the AC system. I simply cut off the belt since my '92 civic has it around the lower engine mount. I first had to remove the power steering pump to get at it. You might get at it from below if you remove the splash guards.

I replaced AC compressor on my car myself. You can reach 4 bolts from the top and when you unbolt it compressor should go down. At least I couldnt lift it up because some thing was on way or I couldn't get a good grip on it. I bought compressor for $70.00 at jank yard and put that back. I think some one helped me because I had to put compressor from the bottom. When every thing is bolted on, you might need to put compressor oil first and then freon. Don't over charge system. it would be good if you could create a vacum in AC system before charge it. Any way you can take it to the shop just to put a freon in there.

I'm betting it's the compressor.
