Default how many quarts of oil to use? (reply fast puhlease!!)

I don't have a Manual or anything to refer to and I did a search, but I'm still kind of eary on how much to put in because noone mentioned specific engine type.

But I have a D16Y8 (97' Civic EX) I think it's 4.5quarts.. but still unsure.

Thanks

I replaced the filter (i always do on an oil change?)

okay, so I put 3 1/2 and when I pulled the car off the ramps and then started it and then turned the car off I'm just a tad past the first hole on the dipstick.

Which hole on the dipstick should I be at?

EDIT: Just went and checked again, I'm close to the 2nd hole.

Midway is right, but you can go up to the top one if you burn more oil than might me expected.

I don't think I burn any oil :dunno:

also, if you didn't notice my edit I'm almost to the top one, but like I said I only put 3 1/2 quarts..?

Should I just put the remaining 1/2 quart?

Good deal.
Meh, I got 230,000 on the Z6 and it needs to be topped off in the amount of about a quart every two weeks, depending on how much super-speed -freeway driving I do.

for my 96 hx, its supposed to be about 3.5. i put in 3.25 and its right at the middle. you should be between the lines, doesnt really matter where, just between. if youre under the first one, you dont have enough, over the second one, too much. i always check mine about once a week just to make sure its still good.

The manual says 3.5 qts, and that puts it at the higher hole on the dipstick. Do NOT put more than this.

The reason why you don't put more than you need is because the oil level will be so high in the oil pan that the crankshaft (which is just above the oil pan and spinning at a very high rate) will froth up the oil. Frothy oil is very hard for your oil pump to circulate if at all and you'll LOSE lubricatioin due to this.

So if you put too much, pull the drain plug to drain some out to the right level.
