Lancer Evo kills the s2000 on the track son (and for less $). That "sportscar" loses to a fodo sedan. That's embarassing. God forbid it's an Evo MR because the s2000 may get lapped quickly. To someone that's 6'4", the s2000 doesn't look so good. Especially not if I have to sit in it with my knees in my mouth. I personally think the s2000 looks stupid on the track because it's a convertible. But it would sure look great in my girlfriend's driveway.

Ford sucks for the most part, I agree. But a '78 Pinto still outlasted my Honda's engine. And you can buy one of THESE "Fords" for under $20k (maybe not in this condition)... there's no question they're sports cars/muscle cars that will chew up and spit out an s2000 or an NSX because they'll do exacly that to a Murcielago. Just forget about the reliability part...

My D16Y8 ('00 Civ EX coupe) has 62,500 mi and still runs and sounds like new ! But I guess that kind of mileage is not considered "high", especially compared to what some of you have.

And I agree. Honda makes great economy/commuter cars (like mine, which is bone stock). I've never had any problems or CEL's with it. But when it comes to performance, it's virtually impossible for a Civic (even one that's heavily modified) to compete with a Mustang, Camaro, or 300C/Magnum.

I guess those domestic guys are right... "There's no replacement for displacement" as a coworker of mine says whenever he sees my Civic parked next to his '89 5.0L Mustang . Oh well, at least I get better MPG !

I don't own an American car, but there are lots of them I'd buy over a Honda... if only they were the same price. ...and Detroit makes lousy economy cars. I guess it's all what you're about. Honda does have reliable economy locked down pretty well.

That may be true, but it seems that a true measure of a car performance embraces more than just raw power. If Honda built a V8 type racer, and I was in the market for such a vehicle, then I would buy that over anything Detroit produces. Unless we live at the track, most of us use our cars for the daily grind and the car we have better shine on that competition. I see Honda's and indeed other Japan Inc. products routinely reach 100, 200k w/ out problems. My own Civic has 158K on the odometre and I just bought it used from someone who probably did not give it the best care in the world, yet it runs ok. I can drive it 66 miles a day back and forth to work and fill it up at the end of the week for less than $15 and that is also a very impressive statistic. Will a Mustang or GTO smoke my Civic?...Absolutely, but will they be as reliable, economical, long lasting or practical as my little red baby? most likely not. In the end, when all is said and done, Detroit will always sell what they make and so will Honda. The thing is that if Detroit intends to win a larger piece of the market share, they need to imitate the quality of Honda, while at the same time rataining the features that make them unique.

Detroit's not missing anything, though. They're building exactly what they need to. My civic gets 44mpg, and while that IS an impressive statistic, it's the least exciting car I've ever driven. Don't get me wrong, it's still fun to drive, and the practicality is overwhelming, but it just has TOO MANY limitations FOR ME to be happy with it as an only car.

I re-read what I posted, and while I still feel what I posted, I think too much tone can be read into it. Calling a car an economy car is not an insult, but economy and performance don't go together because economy limits performance. If Honda made a 8-banger sports car, almost nobody could afford it, and there are tons of cars that would destroy it that cost a lot less.

I have nothing but respect for people that take a Honda or Acura chassis and make it fast... or any other car for that matter. That's a testament to that person's intelligence and skill. It almost always results in a turbocharger being added to achieve it... and if you asked me... if Honda actually cared about who Detroit is catering to... or what their enthusiasts want... Maybe they'd build a turbocharged production car, but they never have! They're too concerned with economy to worry about what our domestic buyers are looking for.

I think both need to keep doing exactly what they're doing. Sort of like the right and left wing political parties of our government driving everything into the middle. Everyone with a weekend gas guzzler needs an economical daily driver. And all of us are going to eventually make our cars what we want them to be with aftermarket parts.
