Default fuel gauge problems!!

I just picked up a new -used car. 1995 honda civic ex si.
This thing gets awesome gas mileage, in fact the gauge reads full permanantly. Any ideas?? I checked the sending unit, it appeared fine, no chaffed wires or broke connections. The gauge just doesnt want to drop, even the with ignition off. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you check resistance of the sender? Does it change from empty to full? Do you have proper power in that circuit back there?

At least on my Integra, the gauge stays where it was when you turn off the car. So I guess if the circuit is messed up it'll just stay.

Yeah, I verfied power to sending unit. Then I tested the sender, its fine. I checked the gauge to make sure it wasnt sticking, I moved the needle but it goes to full.

Any of your buddy's have a similar car? If they do try swapping out their cluster and testing it.

i've had a similar problem and i found the solution.
in the back of the gauge, where the 2 coils are located, there are very tiny copper wires which connect all the resistors/diodes. they each travel from within the coil and are soldered to 3 out of the 4 mounting pins. if any of these wires are shorting out or disconnected, the gauge will malfunction.

-take the gauge and flip upside down
-temp gauge has 1 resistor (blue) and 1 diode (copper)
-fuel gauge has 2 resistors, no diodes
-1 wire should be attached to bottom mounting pin (letter E for EMPTY)
-1 wire should be attached to pin holding both resistors (half tank)
-1 wire should be attached to the stand-alone ground pin (no mounting bracket)

hope that helps!
good luck!

Try changing the sending unit, or there is a loose wire on the sending unit.
