Downshifting - Good or Bad?
Hey, what are the pros and cons of downshifting? It helps a lot when i'm driving, but it seems like it puts a lot of wear and tear on the engine. Also, when i'm downshifting, should i rev the engine up to speed, or should i just let the clutch out slowly at idle speed? Thanks.
it's worse to ride the clutch.
There are certain speeds that you should downshift at in accordance with their respective gears. Clutches wear out so plan on dropping the cash for a new one sometime down the road.
You shouldn't downshift into first, or downshift harder than you would rev the engine up.
if you want to downshift and keep rolling in that gear then yes ease it into gear using the throttle to make it smooth and let off or get on it as much as needed.

Downshift if you need to accelerate fast and ur rpm's have dropped. Also, don't downshift with the intent for it to slow you down.
Don't downshift to slow down, but downshift AS A RESULT of slowing down.
what i mean by this is dont 'downshift to let the engine do the braking for you. Use your brakes to slow down, but downshift as you use your brakes so that you are in the proper gear in case you need to accelerate once again.

IMO, using the engine to slow down the car is fine. The only stress you will put on your tranny is when you engage the clutch and it starts spinning faster in a lower gear. Rev-matching will decrease this stress.
I agree with bluetoo, don't downshift into first unless you are rolling very slowly and coming to a stop or are already completely stopped.

Downshifting is ok... just make sure to rev match.
At higher RPMs, you'll probably feel the shifter resist going into gear because the synchro isn't synchronized yet. When you feel resistance, you are wearing out your synchros. In this case, you might want to double clutch.
But use your brakes for stopping, not your engine. Downshifting is for getting into the appropriate gear for accelerating after your deceleration.

Last time I'll tell you this. Post with respect. If you can't post with respect, don't post at all. I'm sick of you whoring/double posts all over the board. Let's not even talk about the lack of good information you post.
You'll rack up the warning point from here on out.
