IMO, using the engine to slow down the car is fine. The only stress you will put on your tranny is when you engage the clutch and it starts spinning faster in a lower gear. Rev-matching will decrease this stress.

I agree with bluetoo, don't downshift into first unless you are rolling very slowly and coming to a stop or are already completely stopped.
