Not illegal, but you might not pass emmisions depending on your state. I dunno what Ohio is like.

Hrm must just be cali then, because the fine for not having a cat on a car that is still within smog dates is a very hefty fine.

Well the cat convert a lot of the smog into diff gasses and that's why I say you might not pass emmisions. I'm not a pro on this subject, just makes sense to me.

Like I said, I'm no pro but here ya go: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/catalytic-converter.htm and what are you asking a yes or no on? Will you pass emmisions or is it legal?

You will not pass emissions without one, and no its not legal in california, I dont know if it is in other states.

Yes. This is not a state-by-state issue, it is federally illegal to intentionally remove (and replace with solid pipe, resonator, or muffler) the cat converter from any car equipped with one. Period, end of story.

Most states don't enforce it, or have checks for it, thus making most people think it is legal. It is not.

That said, I have removed my cat converter.
