Default timing belt tensioner question d16y8

Hi,

how do you know if the tensioner is properly tensioned when installing a new timing belt? I have a Haynes manual but it was not very clear on this I think...can this be measured like the other drive belts by checking out its deflection?

Thanks.

The tensioner should have a spring attached that sets the tension automatically. If you over tighten the belt you will hear a noise from the bearing of the tensioner.

In order to get your old belt off you'll have to loosen up the tensioner bolt and push the assembly back. Once you've got it back, tighten it up snug to hold it in place. When you get the new belt in place, loosen the tensioner bolt 180 degrees, rotate your crank counterclockwise 3 teeth and then re-tighten the tensioner. That sets the proper tension on the belt. I just finished doin the same job last weekend. It was a PITA but worth it for the money saved.

If you are replacing the belt it is a good idea to replace the water pump too, since it is behind the timing belt it is simply a smart thing as far as saving some headaches later.
