Default Cracked or bent valves...ah well

Last night coming home from school on the highway (East on 80/94 in Indiana), and did not see the 2 FOOT PUDDLE. Well, engine turns over no compression. I'm guessing cracked or bent valve(s). Ok my question is just swap out the whole motor because it had 147k on it, or just get the head repaired. My mechanic said just to get the head repaired, but I know that d16y8 motors are pretty cheap anyway. He didn't say, but it sounded to me like he wouldn't want to swap the whole engine. It is an auto, I've heard of some people on here getting the b18b auto swap, do you think that would be easier said than done or just get Y8. It's wierd because I'm not really that pissed about it. h:

As far as my opinion iwould just replace the motor. Y8's are readily available. For the amount you would pay to fix the head, that will cover most if not all of the new y8. COncering the b18 B swap. I have no helpful information to provide with that so hopefully someone else will chime in

compare what it would cost to fix it as opposed to just swapping. Remember that if you swap to a bseries you will need new axles, shift linkage, tranny, ECU, mounts. If you go with a Y8 swap, you will need to replace the ECU to match the Engine. Figure everything you'd need into the cost of each and then make your decision based on the price differences and what you can afford.

Cool guys thanks for your input. So, I mean I really don't have money coming out of my ass, but want it done right, there won't be any problems long term wise if I just repair the head? I think I read somewhere that if you get a new(IDK if this applies to a rebuilt one) head on an old block in about three months it will start to smoke and stuff, I guess because the top end is stronger...am I right on this or is it false? Again thanks for all your help.

No, that's not right. You can rebuild the head, but if you hit water I'd be much more inclined to think that it's your bottom end that is ruined - speaking from personal experience.

I'm with this guy.....water does this really cute thing where it won't compress like air and has a nasty tendency to bend rods.........but either way, if you can get a good price just get a new motor...less headache and straight forward..

and I've never the whole thing about smoking in three months cause the head is stronger.......or anything of the sort....sounds like someone is trying to get you to buy something....

Good luck and know whats going on before you dish out money.

What's up guys. It is definitely my bottom end (damn). Now I have 2 options...a)just get another auto y8 motor and put that in (cheap)...or...b)search for a b-series auto and swap that in. I know when you go to b-series you need all the regular stuff like axles, mounts and stuff like that but to keep the automatic, would the linkages and stuff be different? I am talking about a 96 ex auto. What would be needed for that, not the 5speed route. Oh, and I have searched to no avail. Thanks.

Never done a Bseries auto swap, but I think that you'd have to change the shift linkage out too.

I so called this one. :irock:
