Default Cam Gears...do they help that much??

Alright...I am starting to do little things to my engine and my little company I go through that is local are selling a Skunk2 Cam Gear (sohc) for my car for 95 bucks shipped. I was wondering do they help out that much. I have seen walkthroughs on how to do them and they don't seem that hard to do but I was wondering if they are worth getting. I have heard from people that they give a good amount of power because they are lighter and what not but is that true? And if so, how are they better? Is it just a matter of being lighter or....

Thanks for the help!

They will make a small amount of power if you can get your car on a dyno and adjust them to where they need to be. I don't believe they are lighter, or at least by any large degree, than the stock ones. Each engine is slightly different in what it wants. The only way to make power with them, is to set it to 0 and try advancing or retarding it slowly and stop where it makes the most extra power.

I wonder how effective they would be on a SOHC anyway. Typically on a DOHC engine, the intake likes to be advanced and the exhaust retarded to make the most power. You can only advance or retard both at the same time in a SOHC. However, my friends ITR liked both advanced though so each engine has it's own specific needs.

It's mostly a timing issue.. thas something that i would suggest if you plan to use a nitrous setup or something that you would want to adjust your timing with to get car running good with your other mods.. pick up a cam & a cam gear & u'll notice a good amount of imporvement.

I have a skunk2 cam gear on my sohc d16z6 w/ stock cam and other bolt-ons....best thing to do is make sure you have had a recent tune-up and vavle adjustment before installing the cam gear...My car is retarded 1.5degress after dynoing at 142hp@6000rpms and 125tq@6000rpms.

They really aren't going to make a huge difference until you have more mods.......sure won't hurt to get them but I'd get some other power adders first like maybe some cams or something before I got cam gears.
