Default OBDII-OBDI check engine light

Since my car still has the obdII plug in for my reader and I converted to OBDI, does that mean I can still use the reader to read the codes from my obd! ecu?

though I havent tried it myself heres what I assume. Because the emissions places can no longer connect to your ecu using their diagnostic connection Im going to assume that you cant either..... but I could be wrong.
