Default 98 Civic Coupe Si (US EX model) A/C? 5spd

Im wondering if everyone notice the big loss in power when the A/C is running? As soon as I turn it on, it seems like I loose at least 20 hp. It feels like I'm towing something. As soon as I turn it off, it feels smooth again. Even acceleration is alot slower with the darn thing on. I drove a new Civic EX and there is really no difference felt when the A/C is on or off.

Could there be something wrong? A/C is cooling ok.

That's normal. The A/C compressor is attached to the engine with an accessory belt like your power steering and alternator but it uses a clutch that can disengage the pulley on the compressor when your not using your A/C. In order for an A/C system to work, the compressor has a considerable amount of work to do so it does take some power from the engine. Some newer cars use electric pumps to run the A/C system (and even PS), I don't know if the newer Civic do or not though? Some cars, especially those with larger motors and therefore more torque, the effect is less noticable.

Andy described it perfectly... I remember when I had my D, and going uphill with the A/C on was a mission!
