They're not performance engines.

Yes. It applies to all D engines, they pretty much all equally suck with few exceptions.

I'm assuming (read: seriously hope) you were refering to "SC".

SC= supercharger

HAHA!! usually i would agree with you...but we're talking about d series engines here man!! the best all motor d series engine is still inferior to the worst b series. however, boost is boost...and boost on a d series is not that bad.

back to the topic: if you're looking to make the car faster without spending much money, then do a head swap, get some bolt-ons, and do the little stuff. you'll still be a little behind a b16, but you don't have to change the engine.

honda's have a narrow power band.

boost your honda, you achieve a flatter power curve, while making much more power than any super duper japanese cam.

honda = turbo, it's the only way these things move.

What performance options are there for him that would give him reasonable performance for the dollar? He doesn't want to run nitrous either.
Can he afford a new transmission? An EX/Si tranny obviously won't give him more power, but it'll make the car quicker. Also, if you have any machinist friends, take some pounds off of the flywheel.
