Default 02 sensor..why so expensive?

hi gang, fabs here..i hear that the 02 sensor should be changed at every 120k (km) or so...my car currently has 124k on the dash. is it really necessary that it be changed? i currently get around 300-350k on a tank in the city and the car runs okay? i was out today and asked how much it costs of a sensor, it costs around 200-300 canadian!!! i was tripping!!! why so expensive? i bought one for my old beloved eagle talon that i had before and it was around 100 bucks...i still can't figure this one out.
thanks a bunch

No idea why they're so expensive... My rule of thumb is this... Don't worry about it until you're getting mileage that isn't what it used to be, your check engine light comes on, or you can smell you're running way rich. Otherwise, it's jsut another way for Honda to empty your pockets...

Bakeoff..thanks for the reply, i find that this is one thing about japaneese cars, yes they run good, and have a good resale value, but when it comes to parts and servicing i must say they're on the shorter end of the stick. My talon was the same, good car but very cramped engine, my brothers subaru, great car but parts are veeeeerry expensive. My usual rule of thumb, but a car that's build where you live (i.e. gm....) i'm a gm guy so...i have the honda for now, but would like to sell it when i get back from europe.
thanks a bunch

jap engines tend to have smaller parts than american engines and thus are harder to make and more expensive, plus most of them are imported

Many Civic O2 sensors, especially on the fuel economy models (HX, VX) are ridiculously accurate. Many people use them as wideband O2s.

You can buy a universal O2 sensor for about $80. Just go to Pep Boys, Kragen, Grand Auto, etc.

argh.... i had a #1 cel - o2 content in the exhaust. so i changed it with a bosch ($50). now i still have the CEL. someone just old me that bosch's read rich. i checked the price of the oem sensor, and it runs $150. i just need to pass smog, so i dont wanna blow $150 on my CX motor just for a stinkin o2 sensor. im thinking i should pickup a wideband (so i can use a a/f meter later) or an oem b16 sensor (which is the motor i plan to get)

They are expensive cause it contains titanium which converts CO to CO2.

Mine was acting up when I reinstalled my header. But just some switched wires. Maybe try finding a used one to tide you over til you swap. I might even still have the one from my cx. Ill check when I get home.
