To take off the springs, you ahve to take the shocks off anyway... You could get some KYB GR2's, and be happy for a while. They're a gas shock... But I'd probably lay down the cash on some good ones the first time.

Anywhere from 250 to 1000 for something pretty decent.

don't half ass anything when it comes to suspension.. you might regret it later on
