VTEC (which stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) is an electronic and mechanical system in some Honda engines that allows the engine to effectively have multiple camshafts. As the engine moves into different rpm ranges, the engine's computer can activate alternate lobes on the camshaft and change the cam's timing. In this way, the engine gets the best features of low-speed and high-speed camshafts in the same engine. Several of the links below go into the actual mechanics of the VTEC system if you are interested.

Ya, it's a pretty cool setup. A lot of moving parts coming alive in a specific balance. Glad I could help out.

The Honda engineers really outdid themselves when they thought up VTEC. Other car manufacturers are creating their own types of VTEC now. Damn losers...

Depends on what you want to do with the motor. VTEC does make more power, but I've always been told that the nonVTEC motors are better for FI.

Don't know how true that is. :dunno:

I'm happy with my B18C1 and enjoy VTEC.

the gsr motor has more power than an ls. ls doesnt have vtec but it is torqy. i would rather have a gsr cause you could easily convert it to a b18c5 cause the blocks are the same

again, depends on the goal of the owner. putting some C5 cams, springs, retainers, and some C5 pistons will give you a C5, but you wouldn't want that for FI.

You should decide on what you want the motor to do and what you plan to do to it before making a purchase. jmo
