Default Internet Explorer Question (kinda long-winded)

I had an ADSL install today that didn't work & need some technical advice.

To start, let me let you know what we have. Bellsouth uses Westell modems that have ethernet & usb both on them (you can use 1 or the other). It logs in PPPoE. The Westell has a setup page like a linksys router that is web-based.(192.168.1.254)

I had the dsl working @ the jack & had configured the modem w/ my laptop & could surf fine.

I then loaded the usb drivers on the customers pc (win98se) & the network stack & device manager showed the modem.

I opened IE & got "page cannot be displayed". I went to the ms-dos prompt & could ping the 192.168.1.254 address, so that told me the pc could see the modem fine. I did a release/renew & still couldn't pull the setup page. I then unplgged the usb & used the customer's ethernet (the pc was on a network) & still couldn't pull the setup page.

Now I know I've got an IE problem, cause it works fine with my laptop. I then removed IE6 & reverted to IE5 (cust recently upgraded). Still no setup page. I then went to add/remove programs & took out dial-up networking & IE/Outlook & did a restart. Then reinstalled IE & dial-up networking. STILL can't pull setup page, but can ping it in ms-dos!!!! FFFFUUUUCCCCKKKK!!!!:madfawk:

I then installed Netscape from a cd I had & still the same.

The only thing I can think is that the WINSOCK (sp?) file was corrupted. :dunno:

Anybody know how to repair it without reinstalling the OS? This is the second time I have had this in about 3 years doing ADSL & would like to know what to do in the future.

Our tech support just tells us to tell the customer that this is beyond what we do & they need to have it fixed themselves.
