Single is better than one multi-color one because you if you run out of just one color on the multicolor one you have to replace the whole thing, and if you had singles, you can just replace that one color.
That's a myth, studies performed by Hewlett Packard show that when people run out of one colour they typically run out of the others shortly thereafter.
