just got back from Florida where my car felt like it had only 160 hp...because it did!

Here in CT. my 98 pulls like a train. I know Hondas have this awful safeguard protecting against detonation but do other makes have it? Is there any way around it? My old Nissan SR20 didn't cut power in the summer....
