the problem is that some of the junk gets into the filter, which is what you want, but also the junk falls into the pan. in an old motor that wasn't taken care of, that sludge can damage the oil pump. i've been recommended to never use them, ever. they work & clean the motor alright, but sometimes it'll clean out your wallet.
