Could it be possible that they seemed like they were on so tight because they were cross-threaded? Using a breaker bar isn't out of the ordinary at 80 ft-lbs. I slip a small pipe on my ratchet when i loosen my lugnuts.

Put it on just tight enough so that you can remove them with your car accessories in case you get a flat. Specifications are always tighter than necessary.
I'd be careful though. If you make them too loose, they might not stay tight over time.
