First before you go changing the waterpump change your thermostat and gasket. It most likely isn't opening, if your upper hose isn't getting hot. You won't see any flow through your radiator until the thermostat opens. It's still posible that your water pump is no good, but i'd still change the thermostat first since it's a lot easier to do and will cost you 10 bucks maybe. But your heater shouldn't have anything to do with your thermostat opening. If the coolant was warming up it should have been blowing hot air through, so maybe you do have a water pump problem.
