here in MI i know if it's anything under 30 inches it requires a pistol permit. if it has a silencer of any sort then it's also illegal.
in illinois anything over 700fps or over .80 caliber is considered a firearm and follows all laws pertinent to a reg long gun.

Man I researched it because I am going to be picking up a couple black powder rifles in the next year so I can return to gun season for hunting and was considering a .50 cal air rifle...not that this changes things but I totally missed restrictions. Granted California I knew about the blow guns and NYC is pretty obvious but the rest I missed in a big way
