What they bring into my life far out ways any sort of expense. I don't see them as items. I don't own them. Sure.. in technical terms I do. But.. they are as much a part of my family as any human. Some people understand that bond. Some don't. It's cool.
My dog is fun to play with. I dig him so much and I would be heartbroken for a long time. Then, I would suck it up, adopt a new mutt and play squeaky sheep with it. My dog provides no more for me than the Wii does. Plain and simple he is an entertainment item, a luxury.
On the other hand I have felt my baby move in my womb, I have breast fed him and kissed his boo boos. My future is him. When I am old and can no longer care for myself, he will be the one who does it. He is going to grow and go to college and the potential is there for him to change the entire human race. Maybe a cure for cancer or being part of the diplomatic team that brings peace to wartorn places.
I know it sounds awful but I would rather see 100 dogs die than one child, no matter whose child it is. Especially in China where some of those poor women have only one and they have poured their hearts and souls into those one darling precious bundles only to have the hand of God demolish the school and crush them.
