The other option, is if your entertainment center has a "smaller" shelf put it on there, and have a game play that bogs the system down and leave it that way for 24/7. That's how my roommate got his on his Elite. He used his as a media center so it was on 24/7 and poof...RRoD
When vertical, the left-center of the XBox console is where the CPU sits. By placing it horizontal, the shelf actually cooked the system.
Wood = not breathable, so it trapped all the heat and acted like a stove top.
