Then take a conservative approach and leave the motor stock (or near stock) until you have the bank roll to finance a major build or move on to a newer, faster machine.
Case in point: i bought my Integra a few years before I returned to college. To date, I've invested only about $3K in the car. Nearly all of it has gone into upgrades separate from the motor.
It was never going to be the fastest car in LA, there are far too many RS4s, F430s and 911 Turbos for that to be the case. So I focused on making the car an enjoyable daily driver instead.
I'd suggest you do the same.
