It's novel and yes you can compare them because there are a ton of very important details left out of the movie that are important to understanding what is happening and why. Not showing the flashbacks of what happened in his own house, the neighbor not being included, the women taunting him at night, his nightly alcohol induced slumber..... and the list goes on.
Granted I haven't seen it yet but I have talked extensivley with several who have and who have also seen both the films made on it before as well as read the book, they all told me it was good but save the money if you know the book.
i was speaking in direct regards of them being vampires vs. whatever the current debate is in the film. the creatures were clearly more "vampire" like in the books than they were portrayed in this movie.
and yes, like i mentioned in a previous post, the film has several holes in the plot vs. the books. typical "hollywood" scenes were used in place of further developing the plot and storyline IMO.
