Default Camera kroo: shopping for a compact

Well, my Olympus (C-770 ultra zoom) crapped out, and it'll cost $165 to fix it. I'd rather have a smaller camera anyway, so I'm just going to get a new one. Where my old camera was more for hobby shooting, the new one will be needed for work, and thus must accept magnetic wide angle lenses (I don't think this narrows it down too much), my c-770 could only take filters, not lenses.

Requirements:

-Compact, realistic pocket-sized
-Not much more than $300, preferably less
-Doesn't need full manual controls, but should have aperture priority and shutter speed priority, and a good selection of shooting modes (low light, indoor, etc)
-not too laggy

Thats pretty much it. Something known for longevity/reliability would be nice.
Also, it should preferably be something carried by normal stores so I can return it if it doesn't pan out.

TIA
