They don't have to, but again, while you're in there....

I replaced mine only because I bought a used motor and wanted to reseal the motor while it was out of the car. They're not hard to replace. Carefully pull them out, grease the lips and use a socket or something to push it back in on the appropriate side of the lip (reinforced).
