Doing work yourself is fine for many people, and yes, you can save by doing it. However, some people don't have a good place to work on their cars (including a lift for some jobs), some don't have the tools, some don't have the time, some don't have the expertise and don't want to spend the time to acquire it, and some just don't enjoy it and don't mind paying a professional to do so.
