It does fine on the freeway, I weigh 250lbs and I am 6"1. I have no trouble hitting 80mph.

I know what you mean, I have a friend who last week I taught to ride on the Rebel, and he wants a Boulevard S50. He does well in a parking lot, but he isn't the kind of kid I would feel safe with having 600cc in his hand. Yet.

Don't touch the Rebel. My ex has it and it is like a kiddie bike even the first time on it. The BEST cruiser to learn on is the Honda Shadow 600 or 750. It is VERY user friendly and can still be used for anything. You can't go above 85 really, but you don't really need to on the cruiser. it also handles really well in corners.
I say get a Honda Shadow.
This man speaks the truth. Although I love my Rebel, and am going to keep it even when I get a new bike in the spring, follow his advice. I have seen many older Shadows selling in the 3-4k range, heck, maybe even an older Vulcan.
Pros to Rebel:
MPG
Nimble
Easy maintenance
Beater bike -- great for running errands or picking up little items
Drop it? At least it wasnt that 7k Boulevard M50
Cons:
Little small if you are tall
Small engine
Some people will taunt you
Gets blown around in winds around 10mph+ on the open freeway
