Rotary engines are perfectly reliable, the overly turbocharged examples in the RX-7 gave the type in general a bad reputation.

Rotary engines do not "burn oil" as if something wrong is going on. The only way for them to lubricate their apex seals is to inject oil into the combustion chambers, so yes they do consume oil. Check the level and top off accordingly.

The main thing the RX-8 has in its favor is that Mazda is very good at building a nice-handling FR chassis. If you intend to amuse yourself by taking your vehicle out on country back roads and chucking it around, then you will like it. If you want something that's a sports car so you can look cool driving around suburbia, then you may want something that doesn't require you to perform such brain-intensive tasks as checking your oil level every third time you get gas.
