Default 98 V6 tranny slipping

I have a 98 v6 coupe with 118k miles. I noticed a couple of weeks ago that the transmission started slipping. The engine will rev when upshifting and will shift very hard when downshifting on 3-2 and 2-1 intermittenly. The oil appears to be full with some darker discoloration. The check engine light has not yet come on. I spoke with a Honda Service Manager today, and he said that Honda only replaces these with remanufactured trans. It will cost about $4,000.

What can I do to get more mileage out of the car? My cousin's an engineer at Mitsubishi Motors Manufacturing and suggested that I try a product called transfix.

The service manager suggested that I not change the trans oil because the slipping will get much worse.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I don't really want to spend $4k on a car that is only worth $5k.

Thanks.

Mike
