There should be positive pressure coming from the breather at idle. There are holes that lead from the head directly to the crankcase, so you will see pressure being relieved there in addition to the PCV valve.

Here are your options. My current setup is pretty much identical to yours except that I am using an open breather Moroso catch can to catch all the crap. For my engine build, I am going to remove the breather box and run the two ports from the back of the block directly into a catch can.

You will have to deal with the smell if you are venting any PCV pressure to the atmosphere. The only two ways to avoid the smell is to setup the intake slashcut or downpipe/exhaust slashcut.
