What kinda of riding are you going to be doing?

I have a Specialized Hardrock, which is basically an entry level bike for the dirt. It works ok for light trail riding. But I have already out ridden the fork and brakes. I paid close to $400 brand new.

At $250, I would look for used ones. A new $250 bike is not meant for the mountains. And youre not getting anything light with that kinda money.
