john is right, it does go into the weapon. m1 garand I believe. during WWII germans would listen for the clip? to eject after the last shot, which made a very distinct PLING sound.

yup, my grandpa actually told me before he died that they used to carry around extras and would shoot off about 5 rounds and then with their fingers make the sound with the empty clip that mimicked the clip being ejected to draw out germans who assumed his weapons was empty..which it wasn't.
